Translation Job: How to find and win Freelance Translation Projects. Secrets and Tips!
I am not going to retell the whole plot, but to cut a long story short, we can single out the following results:
- The number of freelance translators is growing (more and more people want to earn money using their language skills)
- The number of people that need freelance translations is growing (because of globalisation, expand of world trade relations and so on.)
After I read it I asked myself: can these both groups easily find each other? The answer was no. In any case, not so easily.
Let us try to understand how it is possible for the freelance translators to find freelance translation projects and what is more important: How is it possible to win the projects, because that is finally your gaol!
A friend of mine, named Alexander, registered at one translation marketplace one year ago. He checked the projects every day, bided for a lot of them, but could not win anything. He tried to bid the lowest price and the fastest delivery time but it didn’t help.
Then he decided to invest his time and improve his profile on this web site. He described in details all his skills and experience, added nice friendly photo, uploaded some certificates that he has. He spent 3 hours for it, but finally it helped him very much. Within next week he managed to win 2 small projects and earned 240 €. He is a student and for him it was a very good result!
So we can draw the first conclusion out of this story: Invest some time for making a good and detailed profile. This page will “work for you” after it! It will be your virtual office and if it looks attractive it will draw many customers!
To continue the story, Alexander registered at three other freelance translation market places. Copied his “good working” profile in each of them and started fighting for projects. After this action he had at least one project per week. It gave him 500 to 1200 € per month and he could finance his studies with that money.
Second conclusion: Register at 3-5 freelance translation marketplaces to increase your chances and to have 3-5 virtual offices!
Now Alexander is happy. He can work whenever he wants, he is his own boss and he is constantly improving his language skills. Last time I spoke to him he told me he is going to learn a new language (Japanese).
The last but not the least, remember the old wisdom – You have so many lives how many languages you can speak. :0)
Good luck!
